I first met fellow artist François Cambe through our shared interest in cyanotype printing. We have collaborated several times over the years, with François generously allowing me to use his studio to make some of my own prints.
Located near Saphan Taksin, his studio sits in a vibrant neighbourhood, hidden within a labyrinth of narrow lanes and small shophouses where even navigating by motorcycle can be a challenge. For Galleries’ Night 2022, François kindly invited me to exhibit my prints in his space, which he opened to the public for the first time.
François has been living in Thailand with his family for several years. Originally trained in materials such as metal, wood and sculpture, his practice now moves between installation, painting and photography. He often combines portraiture, iconography and different printing processes, using images from the present to reflect on those inherited from the past.
For our portrait session, François sat on his worktable surrounded by his large cyanotypes. Being there made me slightly nostalgic for the period when I was exploring the same process more intensively, both with my students and in my own practice. François had been part of that chapter too, offering me his space, his knowledge and his support when I needed it.
Thank you, François, for supporting me in my own endeavours, and for once again letting me into your space.
