Teaching Cinematography at Bangkok University International: I enjoyed teaching Cinematography this semester at Bangkok University International under the Innovative Media Production programme. Most students focus on social-media content, yet their commitment and curiosity exceeded expectations. Their engagement enriched every class. The cohort included students from Myanmar, Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Canada, and Russia. Their diverse views lifted discussions, and their short films sharpened my own craft.
Course Structure
The 16-week course introduced core cinematography skills through weekly, hands-on exercises. Weeks one to six centred on camera basics: exposure, lens choice, and composition.
Each task asked students to match shots from well-known films to deepen visual storytelling. Cinematography starts in pre-production, so the midterm used a one-page script.
Students could tweak details but kept the dialogue and location intact, this forced them to visualise before shooting.
For the final, each student produced a personal short that highlighted cinematography. Their growth from week one was clear. I hope to run this class again and guide another vibrant group
