I recently had the honour of participating in the electrifying “Oh La La” group exhibition held at the PULSE Gallery and Club Back Door, a vibrant addition to the Galleries Night in Bangkok from November 10th to December 3rd, 2023. This exhibition, supported by the French Embassy, brought together a diverse cast of artists to explore the sensual dimensions of art, engaging viewers in a skin-deep sensory experience.
My contribution to this exposition was a video installation titled “L’ Amour et la Violence.” In this piece, I employ video collage and compositing techniques to intertwine scenes from two iconic ’70s films set in Thailand—”The Big Boss” and “Emmanuelle”—thereby examining the intersection of eroticism and brutality against the backdrop of Thailand’s exotic cinematic portrayal. The work manifests the Kuleshov Effect; it juxtaposes intense gazes with scenes of passion and violence, compelling the audience to traverse the spectrum from seduction to sublimation. “L’ Amour et la Violence” is more than an art piece—it’s a conversation starter on the complex narratives of desire and danger and the cinematic fascination with Thailand as a land of allure and peril. This video transcends the transactional nature of art. It is an invitation to engage with the themes of love and violence, challenging viewers to immerse themselves in the deep currents of emotional storytelling.
